Are you a do-it-yourselfer who plans on remodelling your home? Have you considered the possibility of finding asbestos behind your walls, Sydney? Asbestos removal is not something that should typically be done by a do-it-yourselfer. There are many reasons why, but to give you an idea of the inherent danger in the removal process, we’ll list just a few.
What is It?
Asbestos is the name of a group of naturally occurring heat-resistant silicant minerals found in certain products, most notably building materials. When airborne, asbestos particles are often too small to be seen with the naked eye, so during your project, you may not even be aware that you are in danger. A simple facemask won’t ensure protection, either.
What about Danger?
Asbestos causes a malignant lung cancer known as mesothelioma. It is so brutal on our bodies that it even has its own separate chronic fibrotic and inflammatory condition, which is called asbestosis.
When the loose particles of asbestos are inhaled, they cause damage to the lungs and other organs, but the damage may not be detected until years later. It can cause such lung damage that the lungs lose their ability to function, and that then progresses to permanent disability, and eventually, death. Asbestos is bad news for anyone, and should be avoided.
What about Protection?
Sydney, asbestos removal professionals handle asbestos only because they have the industry grade protection and equipment to do so. Otherwise, they would be setting themselves up for disaster. You could remove the asbestos yourself, but in order to do it safely, you would need to invest in similar equipment. This is equipment that you would more than likely never have the need to use again. So, you’re better off just hiring a professional to go in and remove it for you.
Sydney, asbestos removal is not an exaggerated danger. There are decades of science behind it, so don’t take the chance. Hire a professional for that part of the job. Years down the road, your body will thank you for it.
